Best area to stay

For a quick getaway I'd base yourself in the Stare Miasto Old Town or right around it, it's rebuilt beautifully after the war and puts you walking distance to most highlights. Smaller hotels guesthouses or apartments there go for $90 to $160 a night if you choose wisely and the cobblestone streets cafes make it feel special. Another solid option is Śródmieście the central district nearby it's got more modern energy and easy tram access prices similar and you stay close without the tourist crush sometimes. Avoid spots too far north or south unless budget forces it the central areas let you walk or short-ride everywhere and save cash.

5 must-see places
Start with the Old Town Square it's charming rebuilt from scratch with colorful buildings the Royal Castle and that mermaid statue in the center. Then walk over to the Royal Castle itself tour the interiors if you want or just enjoy the outside and gardens it's got that historic punch. Don't miss Łazienki Park especially the Palace on the Water and peacocks wandering free it's peaceful and perfect for a relaxed stroll. Head to the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews if you're into deeper stories the building alone is impressive. Finish with a walk along the Vistula River boulevards for city views bridges and maybe a beer spot by the water.

Simple 2-day route on the map
Day one arrive settle into your place in Old Town or nearby then head straight to the Old Town Square maybe 10 minutes walk to wander the square Royal Castle area and grab a pierogi lunch close by. Afternoon stroll over to the Royal Route toward Łazienki Park that's about 30 minutes on foot or quick tram explore the palace peacocks and green spaces till late afternoon. Back for dinner in the old center. Day two start with the Vistula boulevards walk along the river check out bridges and maybe a morning coffee spot. Then hit POLIN Museum if it fits your vibe or more time in Łazienki if you loved it yesterday. Wrap up with any missed Old Town bits zapiekanka snack and head to the airport. The layout stays pretty tight so most is on foot or short public rides keeping costs low.
